CONSIDER SWITCHING TO TANKLESS WATER HEATERS

Sure, you’ve heard how great the energy savings can be with on-demand water heaters, but they also save water. Ernest Figueroa has more information from the Joshua Basin Water District about tankless water heaters…

Tankless water heaters, also known as demand-type or instantaneous water heaters, provide hot water only as it is needed. They don’t produce the standby energy losses associated with storage water heaters, which can save you money and water. For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, tankless water heaters can be up to 34 percent more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters. For homes that use a lot of hot water, about 86 gallons a day, they can be 8 to 14 percent more energy efficient. If you install a tankless water heater at each hot water outlet, you can achieve even greater energy savings of up to 50 percent.

The initial cost of a tankless water heater is greater than that of a conventional storage water heater, but tankless water heaters will typically last longer and have lower operating and energy costs, which could offset its higher purchase price. Most tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of more than 20 years. They also have easily replaceable parts that extend their life by many more years. In contrast, storage water heaters last 10–15 years.

Owners of standard water heaters will often run their hot water faucets “waiting” until the water turns hot. That’s valuable tap water just going down the drain. To learn more, visit the link below.
