Freshman Congressman Jay Obernolte represents California’s 8th District, including our Morongo Basin, in Washington D.C. Yesterday, the former state assemblyman and mayor of Big Bear Lake held a telephone town hall where he shared his thoughts on a variety of issues and took questions from constituents who called in. Here’s reporter Mike Lipsitz with more on what transpired…
The congressman used nearly half of the hour-long program to explain his position on hot national topics then took questions from those listening on the phone. Obernolte, a Republican who campaigned under the banner of “California Conservative” defended his opposition to the recently passed $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package calling it “hastily put together” and a potential trigger for inflation. Immigration and economic recovery for small business were also discussed but the topic of greatest concern to Obernolte, and one with potential to climb to the top of the charts after a four-year hiatus, was the national debt and deficit spending.
