CONGRESSMAN COOK’S WOMEN OF DISTINCTION NAMED

Ten Morongo Basin women will be honored by Congressman Paul Cook for their contributions to their communities at a ceremony in Apple Valley next week. From Twentynine Palms, the 2013 Women of Distinction include Muffin Hill, for volunteer activities in coordinating art exhibits; Kathi Papp, ensuring that children with exceptional needs receive full services in Morongo Basin Unified School District; Jan Peters, the owner of the Roughley Manor Bed and Breakfast, who hosts over 100 Marines for Thanksgiving dinner every year; Susan Luckie Reilly, a founding board member of the Morongo Basin Conservation Association; and Sandy Smith, a strong advocate for those battling cancer in the Morongo Basin. From Yucca Valley, the honorees include Mara Cantelo, the founder of Tender Loving Cause; Tara Hough, director of the Miss Yucca Valley Scholarship Pageant that has provided scholarships to dozens of young women; Nancy Huntington, a volunteer with the Copper Mountain College Foundation and other non-profits in the Morongo Basin; Nancy Karl, the executive director of the Mojave Desert Land Trust; and Cindy Melland, the publisher of the Hi-Desert Star who led the campaign to build the Brehm Sports Park.
A limited number of seats remain for first awards ceremony honoring 60 women of distinction for the 8th Congressional District. The awards ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 23, at the Apple Valley Town Conference Center. There is no cost to attend, and light refreshments will be served.
