Chapter two of a two-part combined music concert involving both Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley High schools takes place this Thursday night. To get all the details, reporter Rebecca Havely interviewed Yucca Valley High Music Director Bill Barrett…
Last week Twentynine Palms High hosted a combined music concert. This week Music Director Bill Barrett of Yucca Valley High will have the honor of featuring his students in concert. Please explain what is the Twentynine Palms and Yucca High School combined music concert?
MR. B: Well, it’s not just our choirs combining; it’s also the symphonic bands from each high school that combines. Both schools work independently on the music and then they put it together the day of the concert and present it together that evening. There’s also a finale each year that involves all the choirs from both schools and both symphonic bands.
Z107.7: This is an annual tradition?
MR. B: I think this is our 13th annual combined concert.
Z107.7: How do you decide what music to include?
MR. B: We choose our own music for the concert and then decide which numbers we will combine.
Z107.7: There are two concerts performed, one at each high school?
MR. B: Yes, when the concert is at Twentynine Palms High, they perform the bulk of the concert featuring their students work and we join in on a few numbers plus the big finale. Now when the concert is performed at Yucca Valley High, my students are featured and the Twentynine Palms students join in on a few numbers.
Z107.7: Can you give us the date and time of the final concert and the admission fees?
MR. B: The concert is Thursday night, March 5, at 7 p.m. in the Yucca Valley High Gymnasium. Admission is $5 and we’ll have a bake sale; I think we’re doing chili and popcorn too.
