Superintendent/President Darren Otten’s portion of the October Meeting had news of new legislation from Sacramento. Recently signed AB 2 authorizes a community college to waive fees for two academic years for any student attending school full time. A community college must meet all Promise program requirements, including  participating in the Guided Pathways program. The action item of note at the meeting was the agreement between CMCCD and Morongo Unified School District for dual enrollment for high schools students attending CMC. It was updated to add two additional courses and increased the number of students to be served. The board unanimously approved the agreement just in time for the joint meeting with the MUSD later in the day.

It was all about helping students make a smooth transition from high school to college at last night’s joint meeting between the Board Trustees of Copper Mountain College and the Morongo Unified School District. Members of the Copper Mountain College Board led a majority of discussions on the numerous programs available for high school students transitioning to Copper Mountain College. Reporter Andrew Dieleman has the story…

At last night’s joint meeting, the CMC Board went into details on the college’s programs for incoming students, including AB 705, a law requiring California community colleges to help maximize transfer students opportunities to complete transfer-level courses in English and math within a timeframe of one year, and the Promise Program (formerly the BOG Program), which can provide free tuition to first- and second-year CMC students. Both Boards also briefly discussed the Integrity Project, which teaches students how to properly research and site legitimate education sources while conducting research, and the new dual enrollment program between MUSD and CMC. Lastly, the Boards held a lengthy conversation brainstorming potential ideas to help MUSD students learn about the educational opportunities provided by Copper Mountain College.
