COLLEGE AND SCHOOL BOARDS MEET IN JOINT SESSION

When the elected governing boards from Copper Mountain College and the Morongo Unified School District met in an eagerly anticipated joint session on Thursday, the atmosphere in the Bell Center’s Community Room approached euphoria. The meeting began with some procedural awkwardness one might expect when two boards must suddenly act as one. But any awkwardness quickly melted away and everyone in the room introduced themselves; many shared their optimistic visions. That cooperation between the Community College District and the Unified School District could net benefits greater than the sum of the parts seemed an idea whose time had come. So with that in mind, MUSD Superintendent Tom Baumgarten and CMC President/Superintendant Jeff Cummings agreed to work together in the coming weeks with the aim of developing a framework from which a memorandum of understanding could be drafted.
