The Copper Mountain College Board of Trustees met in regular session yesterday (December 9) in the Community Room of the Bell Center. The meeting began with heartfelt comments from the board honoring the service of those retiring from the college this year, including Lisa Hinton (Executive Assistant to Academic Affairs), Lisa Larson (Learning Management Systems Specialist), Jeff Drozd (CTE Job Developer), and Cathy Allen (Art Instructor), whose status as Professor Emeritus was unanimously approved later in the meeting. CMC Foundation Executive Director Sandy Smith celebrated the success of the annual Festival of Wreaths, which raised nearly $20,000 for the college. She also reminded those in attendance about the college’s STEM scholarships (funded by Edison) and the Greenleaf Scholarship, applications for which are now being accepted. She then read the resolution honoring the legacy of F. Roy Greenleaf as part of the college’s ongoing 20th Anniversary celebration, which the board voted unanimously to approve.
Later in the meeting, the Board held a third public hearing and heard another presentation from Cooperative Strategies regarding the four proposed by-trustee area maps for redistricting. During the public hearing and board discussion, concerns were expressed about how 29 Palms was divided in map scenario number four. The board voted unanimously to approve this map, the only scenario in which incumbency was considered because the other scenarios would have required several of the current trustees to run against each other in future elections. The board adjourned until today (December 10) at 1:00 p.m., when they will hold their annual organizational meeting.
