Government offices, banks, schools, and post offices will be closed today (Monday, January 18) in observance of Martin Luther King Junior Day, observed every year on the third Monday of January. King was an influential civil rights leader, best known for his work on racial equality and ending racial segregation in the United States. His life and achievements are remembered and celebrated on this day as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
