The Twentynine Palms downtown redevelopment plan known as Project Phoenix is taking shape. The city plans to build a multi-purpose building on Highway 62, just west of Adobe Road, that will include basketball and volleyball courts, conference and banquet rooms, a kitchen, and galleries for the display of art exhibitions. The library will also be moved from its present location on Adobe Road to the new building, and the old building will be converted into another use. Officials are also discussing the possibility of including affordable housing units, among other improvements such as landscaping, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, a pedestrian walkway, improved parking, and a wastewater treatment facility for downtown. The Twentynine Palms Planning Commission and City Council plan to hold numerous public meetings over the next few months for residents to give feedback on the plans.
