Last night, the Citizens Advisory Committee met to discuss options and ideas for funding the Twentynine Palms Fire Department. Reporter Taylor Thacker was there, and said many people spoke to the Board and gave facts and opinions. Dee Richart, an insurance agent from Williams Insurance, said, “Since the Lear Station closed, anyone who doesn’t live near the Adobe Station will have their insurance coverage raised at some point.” Houses will still be insured, it will just cost more. Randy Leazer summed it all up by saying, “So you’re either paying to keep the fire department open, or you’re paying to keep your house insured.” Larry Bowden added, “If citizens want good fire service, they’re going to have to pay for it.” Later in the meeting, C.J. Horn said, “People pay money for gas, food, sporting events, nails and hair, and you’re complaining about paying for fire protection? I know the value of the dollar, and to spend your money on the fire department is money well spent.” Horn also said, “Why are you worried about paying more for something we have to have? Fire insurance is not optional.” Ideas such as a utility tax, or a sales tax were also discussed, but nothing was finalized and this issue will continue to be reviewed in upcoming meetings.
