Saturday night, the Twentynine Palms High School girls’ basketball team won their second round playoff game against Flintridge Sacred Heart from Pasadena, 55-50. Coach Tim Stanford said the ’Cats came out playing outstanding defense in the first quarter, holding the Tologs to 6 points. A furious second quarter left the halftime score at 26-22, Wildcats. The ’Cats came out strong in the third quarter, raising the 4-point halftime lead to 43-34, as the fourth quarter started. The Flintridge team cut the ’Cats lead to two points with under two minutes to go, but solid free-throw shooting by Nokomis Cabrera and Tatiyanna Mackall sealed the deal for the home team. Filling up the stat sheet on the night were Cabrera with 19 points, 11 rebounds; Mackall with 16 points, 14 rebounds; and Lindsey Scamman with 16 points, 11 rebounds. The Lady Wildcats will play Bishop Montgomery on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at home. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Those prices are set by CIF.
Joshua Springs boys basketball extended their record to 20-3, and extended their season Friday night, defeating the St. Monica Academy Crusaders 60-57 in CIF playoff action. The number 4 seeded Lightning used an 8-0 run in the third quarter to grab control of the game, and held on late, thanks to heroics by Luke Humphreville. Humphreville had nine of his 14 points in the last three minutes of the game to seal the deal, while cousin Clint Humphreville led Joshua Springs with 15 points on the night. With the win, Joshua Springs moves on to CIF Quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive season, traveling to Upland Christian Academy on Tuesday night. Upland is the number 5 seed in CIF Division 6.
