To assist their ongoing effort to improve child passenger safety, the California Highway Patrol has been awarded the California Restraint Safety Education and Training (CARSEAT) V grant. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details …
To help reduce the number of children killed and injured in car accidents, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has won the California Restraint Safety Education and Training (CARSEAT) V grant and will use the funds for public awareness campaigns, training courses, and increased patrols through September 30, 2022. The grant funds are provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
California law requires a child to be restrained in a child safety seat in the rear seat until they are at least 8 years old. Kids older than 8 who are at least 4 feet 9 inches may ride in the rear seat of a vehicle wearing only a seat belt. Toddlers under 2 must ride in a rear-facing car seat until they reach 40 pounds or 40 inches in height.
The CHP will offer educational seminars, new parent classes, as well as free child safety seat inspections and assistance with installations.
Additionally, the CHP will be enforcing seat belt and safety seat violations with a special emphasis during the “Click It or Ticket” campaign May 23 through June 5, 2022, and during Child Passenger Safety Week September 18 – 24, 2022.
