The California Highway Patrol will enforce “zero tolerance” during April for Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Distracted driving is any activity that diverts a driver’s attention away from driving. Several common distractions include using cell phones, iPods, and GPS; eating, reading, shaving or putting on make-up; or anything that causes drivers to stop giving 100 percent of their attention to driving a vehicle. In the few seconds it takes to send or read a text message, a car traveling at 60 miles per hour can travel the length of a football field. In April 2013, 50 people were killed due to distracted drivers. Distracted and reckless driving is the number one killer of teens, and is entirely preventable.
