CHP ON MAXIMUM PATROL OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND

To help keep motorists safe this travel season, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) offers common sense traffic safety tips. The first tip is to leave the dashing to the reindeer and take your time to ensure you arrive safely at your destination. Here’s reporter Mike Lipsitz with more tips from the CHP…

The holidays include a lot of celebrating, stay safe by designating a non-drinking driver. More than 1,000 drivers did not heed this advice during last year’s Christmas Day Maximum Enforcement Period. The result was more than 1,100 arrests for driving under the influence. Data from the CHP shows that at least 16 people were killed and nearly 350 others were injured in collisions involving impaired drivers in California during the same period. This year’s Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period begins at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, and concludes at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, December 25.  During that time, all available officers will be on the road for enhanced enforcement and to assist drivers in need.

Whether your holiday travel includes destinations near or far, you are likely to experience increased traffic.  Practice safe driving habits, including getting plenty of rest, avoiding distractions, and always buckling up.
