About every 11 minutes, a child is involved in a car crash in California, and of those children, 200 were killed between 2016 and 2018. State law requires that children weighing less than 40 pounds sit in a rear-facing car seat. Children under eight must ride in the back seat in an age-appropriate car seat, and the California Highway Patrol recommends that children sit in the back seat until they are 13 years old. September 15-21 is Child Passenger Safety Week, and the CHP is offering free inspections of child car seats to ensure they are installed property, along with education and hands-on training for parents and caregivers.
