The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that, while most parents are confident they have correctly installed their child’s safety seat, 46 percent were found to be installed incorrectly when checked. In 2020, the CHP reported 90 child fatalities in California due to car crashes. California law requires all children under the age of 2, or weighing under 40 pounds and under 40 inches tall, ride in a rear-facing car seat, and all children under the age of 8 must ride in the back seat in an age-appropriate safety seat. The Morongo Basin CHP Station is offering free child safety seat inspections tomorrow (September 25) as part of Child Passenger Safety week. The event will be held at the CHP station (63683 29 Palms Highway) in Joshua Tree from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drive-ups are welcome and no appointments are necessary.
