With or without cell phones, we are a nation of distracted drivers, and the results can be deadly. But the California Highway Patrol has received grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety to tackle the problem. Reporter Heather Clisby has details…
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) states that driving while distracted causes more than 20,000 crashes every year in California. Multi-tasking behaviors such as texting or talking on a cell phone, eating, conversing with passengers or adjusting radio or climate controls can result in tragic consequences.
To address the problem, the CHP has received an “Adult Distracted Drivers” grant to implement an educational and enforcement program through September 30, 2021. Throughout the state, CHP officers will conduct distracted driving traffic safety presentations either in-person or online with regard to the latest state COVID-19 restrictions. CHP will also conduct several distracted driving enforcement operations during this time.
The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year and one out of every four car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving.
