Staff from the Morongo Unified School District and the California School Employees Association continue to negotiate a labor contract. The CSEA is a union that represents classified employees such as security, food service, office and clerical workers, maintenance and operations, and instructional assistants. At its May 26 negotiating meeting, the school district and union were relatively close on salary demands, with the district offering two salary increases totaling 4.25 percent versus one salary increase of 5 percent for the union. However, the union also demanded a restructuring of the salary schedule that will cost an additional $424,000 this year. The union is also asking for 29 instructional assistants to work six hours a day. The district and union have agreed, or are close to agreeing, on health benefit caps, bilingual pay, and vacation and sick leave benefits. In total, the costs of the union’s demands are about $1.8 million, or nearly three times what the school district is offering. The next negotiating session will be held June 17.
