Don’t tell Twentynine Palms High School cheerleader Danielle Leon that cheerleaders aren’t athletes. The ROP Broadcasting student states her case…
Many people are skeptic about cheerleading being a real sport. The American Association of Cheerleading and Administrations states, “Today, cheerleading involves skills which require the strength of football, the grace of dance, and the agility of gymnastics. Complex maneuvers are performed which challenge the limits of the body.” In a majority of school cheerleading is considered an “activity” instead of a “sport” and few notice the athleticism in the sport of cheerleading. Many cheerleaders and coaches are disappointed in the lack of support from their schools in their sport and wish to be recognized for their athleticism and abilities. The definition of a sport is: A physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or overcoming the resistance of a mass, “contesting” or competing against/with a component. Cheerleading is a sport.
