CHARGES EXPECTED AGAINST MARINE WHO KILLED YUCCA VALLEY WOMAN IN HUMVEE CRASH IN APRIL

The California Highway Patrol has confirmed that it has recommended that the District Attorney file charges against the Marine who killed a Yucca Valley woman in a crash in April. Juan Lira, 19, an active-duty Marine, was driving a humvee in a convoy traveling from Camp Pendleton to Twentynine Palms April 19 when he fell asleep at the wheel just east of Whitefeather Road in Joshua Tree. The humvee drifted over the center line, into the westbound lanes, and struck head on, a 2010 Ford driven by Kristen Thrawl, 26. Both vehicles overturned onto the north shoulder of the highway; Thrawl was killed in the crash. Lira was not injured. The CHP is recommending a charge of vehicular manslaughter with no gross negligence, but as of Friday, the charge has not yet been filed.
