CHANGING OF THE GUARD AT THE MORONGO BASIN SHERIFF’S STATION

Changes are coming to the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s station. Last week, Captain Trevis Newport and Lieutenant Luke Niles were both promoted to new positions. Newport was promoted to Deputy Chief of the Special Operations Bureau; he will oversee the aviation, homicide, crimes against children, SWAT, bomb and arson, and narcotics departments, among others. Niles was promoted to captain, and will be in charge of the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s station. While the men will not officially take over their new positions until March 28, they have both started their transition into their new roles. Newport said in a statement that he is truly honored to have served the residents of the Morongo Basin throughout his career with the Sheriff’s Department. He is proud to have strengthened the professional ties between the Sheriff’s Department and the media, the base, the county leadership, and the City of Twentynine Palms and the Town of Yucca Valley. He said Captain Niles is a proven and trusted leader and he leaves the Morongo Basin in great hands. Captain Niles said he is thrilled to be taking command in his home area and looks forward to serving the residents of the Morongo Basin.

Deputy Chief Trevis Newport’s statement:

I am truly honored to have served the citizens of the Morongo Basin throughout my career. During my tenure as commander of the Morongo Basin Station, I am proud to say we have most certainly strengthened many professional relationships with the local media, the Town of Yucca Valley, the City of Twentynine Palms, the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps base and the leadership within the unincorporated areas of the Basin.

I am going to miss the great citizens of the Basin. However, I know for certain that Sheriff John McMahon has chosen a great leader to take command. Captain Luke Niles is a proven and trusted leader within our organization and among the communities he serves within the Basin. The Morongo Basin is, as it always has been, in great hands. I am very excited to see a prosperous future for the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station with Captain Niles in command. My heart always has been and always will be with the great citizens, and the deputies who serve them, in the Basin.

Sheriff’s Lt. Luke Niles
