Celebrate National Public Lands Day at Big Morongo Canyon Preserve this Saturday (9/26)
In partnership with the National Park Service and the National Environmental Education Foundation, National Public Lands Day takes place on the fourth Saturday of September and has consistently been the nation’s largest single day volunteer effort. This year’s theme is “Caring for Our Shared America,” where hundreds of thousands of volunteers will roll up their sleeves to help preserve public lands together through shared projects.
You can approach the holiday with the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve in either ambitious or leisurely fashion. For those wanting to tend to the land, come help remove pre-cut downed timber alongside the Desert Willow Trail with the California Cadet Corps and a contingent of Marines from the 29 Palms Marine Corps Base. A pizza lunch will be provided for the trail teams. Please bring gloves, sturdy shoes, a hat, and water.
For those seeking a more relaxed holiday, join the guided Bird Walk in one of the country’s largest bird sanctuaries. Or join instructor and artist Jillian Sandell to nature journal, where you’ll observe and record the natural world around you including plants, bugs, birds, and the weather. It all begins at 8:00 p.m. when you meet the Preserve staff at the front kiosk this Saturday, September 26 at Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, located at 11055 East Drive in Morongo Valley.
