The Z107.7 News Department has observed a recent uptick in the theft of catalytic converters from high desert auotmobiles. Catalytic converters, which are found in virtually every type of car, contain platinum, and a black market has developed which deals in this platinum.
Detective Tyler Bengard with the the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Morongo Basin Station, spoke with Z107.7 yesterday to offer some information on catalytic converter thefts, saying
“Vehicles targeted by the suspects have been parked in unsecured areas open to the public, which include commercial business parking lots and residences. To avoid thefts, it is recommended that vehicles be parked inside of a secure area. Anti-theft devices for catalytic converters can also be purchased at local automotive stores or online.”
Detective Bengard stressed the importance of reporting catalytic converter thefts to the Sheriff’s Department, saying,
“These thefts have mainly occurred during overnight and early morning hours. We urge anyone who suspects a theft is being committed or see suspicious vehicles their neighborhoods to please call the sheriff’s department and report it immediately. Do not approach anyone suspected of committing these thefts. A description of the suspects and related vehicles should be relayed to Sheriff’s Dispatch to assist responding deputies.”
