CAR-JACKING SAFETY TIPS

We never thought a car-jacking would happen in Yucca Valley. Thursday morning, Obette Lacap, 33, of Beaumont, a pharmaceutical representative from Pfizer, was leaving Dr Prem Sulholtra’s office in the Town Center Mall parking lot, when he was approached by two men who demanded his car. Lacap tried to drive off, but one of the suspects shot him dead through the car’s window. Managing editor Tami Roleff has some safety tips for what you should do to help prevent being car-jacked…

Before you enter your car, be alert to what’s happening around it. If someone is loitering near your car, keep walking. Have your keys in your hand. Park in well-lighted areas, away from dumpsters or large vehicles that block visibility. If someone approaches you and demands your car, don’t resist. Give them your car. Your life is more important than a car that can be replaced. However, if the carjacker demands you get in the car, then you should resist, as your chances of survival diminish greatly if you are in the car with a carjacker. Try to get away from the area as quickly as possible. Take note of what the carjacker looks like so you can give a description to the police—sex, height, weight, race, clothing, whether he or she has an accent, or anything else memorable.
