The Morongo Teachers Association sponsored a forum Thursday for four candidates—including two incumbents—vying for three open seats on the Morongo Unified School District Board of Education. Reporter David Haldane says that much of the discussion centered on the recent antagonistic negotiations with teachers that went on for more than a year…
There were lots of questions about contracts. Specifically, how could a future Morongo Unified School District Board of Education avoid the discord that has characterized negotiations in recent years. The answers were varied, but not by a lot.
Darin Sanden believes in being proactive. Karalee Hargrove suggested that next year’s negotiations begin immediately, and that the board be more forceful in directing the district’s stance. Denise Cohen advocated better communication. And Ronald Palmer, absent due to a recent hospital stay, emphasized in a prepared statement the importance of trust.
It was all part of a candidates’ forum sponsored by the Morongo Teachers Association at Joshua Tree’s Friendly Hills Elementary School Thursday night. Other questions related to charter schools, class size, defining success and the impact of poverty.
After the November election, only three of the four will be left standing.
