A new bakery is coming to Twentynine Palms, thus adding another promising business to the downtown area. The Campbell Hill Bakery will be open soon so get ready for homemade breads, pastries and sandwiches. Reporter Heather Clisby has the delicious details…
Travis Poston and Nancy Tran met and fell in love working in a New York City restaurant. Five years later, they are married with a dog, Big Mac, and launching a new business together, Campbell Hill Bakery, in Twentynine Palms.
“Looking around, we realized that food was something that this town could use more of and we love food. We are passionate about good food, my wife, especially. She is the chef, she is the baker, and I love eating it. We both love food and we thought, ‘Hey, there’s a market for good food and this seems like a wonderful town to serve it in,’” said Travis.
Both worked at the 29 Palms Inn for two years before taking a gamble and putting their talents to work. Nancy holds a degree in Baking and Pastry Arts from California Culinary Academy in San Francisco while Travis, a mixed-media artist, has years of restaurant and bakery experience.
In a nod to two daring souls who also bet on desert life, the bakery is named for pioneering residents, Bill and Betty Campbell, whose house the Postons lived in for two years before settling in Indian Cove.
“It really took me one stay in Twentynine Palms and something that I noticed was, it was just so much peace because I was able to see every star in the sky, it’s just so different from the cities – whether it’s New York, San Francisco, even places like San Jose. It’s just always so crowded. I loved coming out here. Not just the space but the people, and how everybody was just so much friendlier and it wasn’t just about the money or how much you made or your status, like in New York. I think there was just so much pressure. But the quality of life and what I say in this town, in Twentynine Palms itself, it was just so much better and cleaner for me,” said Nancy.
Located at 73491 Twentynine Palms Highway, the Campbell Hill Bakery will be open Monday through Saturday, 6 am until 4 pm; closed on Sunday. For more info, check out campbellhillbakery.com.
“We’re very interested in investing in the town and hoping the town will invest in us. This isn’t a fly-by-night thing for us. We live here. We bought a house here. It was an organic decision to do it. We’re in it for the long haul. We really just want to get knee-deep in the town and let people try our food,” said Travis.
