CALTRANS MEETS WITH DISGRUNTLED LANDERS AREA RESIDENTS

Caltrans staff addressed about 50 residents at last night’s meeting of the Flamingo Heights Community Association. They came to discuss road improvements along an 8.8-mile stretch of Highway 247. Reporter Mike Lipsitz was there and provides the details…
Motorists who frequent Old Woman Springs Road from El Cortez Road, on the grade leading up to the Mesa, to Handley Road, near the Landers line, are well aware of Caltrans presence due to flaggers signaling nighttime lane closures and extensive grading along the shoulder in both directions. Spokesmen from both Caltrans and the project contractor opened the meeting apologetically, saying they should have reached out to the community before breaking ground. The $10 million project, once complete, will add two feet to each lane of the two-lane highway plus add a paved eight foot shoulder in both directions. Paving on the northbound side begins tonight with projected completion of all paving the end of August. As for the perilous turn lane configuration in front of the new Dollar General store, Caltrans faults the county, promising that section will be reconfigured. That change can’t come soon enough for residents who described it as an accident waiting to happen.
