CALIFORNIANS CALLED TO CONSERVE ENERGY THIS WEEK

The operators of the state’s power grid called on Californians to conserve energy Sunday through Wednesday as the state endures a stretch of hot days. Cal ISO, the independent system operator, issued a Flex Alert, asking residents to conserve power from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday. The ISO issued a statewide Flex Alert, a call for voluntary electricity conservation, today through Wednesday, 3 to 10 p.m. each day. Record-breaking heat is straining supplies; consumers should plan for potential outages. The request to voluntarily reduce power use is the first of several steps that Cal ISO might take to avoid power interruptions. Rotating power outages were ordered Friday evening in California for the first time in nearly two decades after unrelenting heat strained the state’s electrical system. Power grid operators say they’ll decide whether to continue the outages on a day-to-day basis.

Cal ISO offers the following power conservation tips:

Turning off unnecessary lights.

Using major appliances before 3 p.m. and after 10 p.m.

Setting air conditioner thermostats to 78 degrees or higher.

Use fans and keep drapes drawn.
