CALIFORNIA IS 10TH LEAST FEDERALLY DEPENDENT STATE

States have received hundreds of billions of dollars in federal aid during the COVID-19 pandemic. A report by the personal-finance website WalletHub illustrates that states with a higher level of federal dependence are likely better positioned to handle the coronavirus pandemic, given that most relief has come from the federal government. In order to identify which states depend the most and least on federal support, WalletHub compared the 50 states across three key metrics: return on taxes paid to the federal government; federal funding as a share of state revenue; and share of federal jobs. In a ranking in which 1 is the most dependent, and 50 is the least, California rates 43rd in return on taxes paid to the federal government, meaning it contributes more to the feds than it receives back (most dependent is New Mexico, followed by Kentucky). It ranks 36th for using federal funding as a share of state revenue, and is 37th for its share of federal jobs. Overall, California is the 10th least federally dependent state. The complete report can be found at the link below.
