CALIFORNIA FISH AND GAME COMMISSION EXTENDS PROTECTION OF WESTERN JOSHUA TREE

Yesterday’s meeting of the California Fish and Game Commission saw the swift approval of extended protections for the Western Joshua Tree. Reporter Heather Clisby has details…

The Western Joshua Tree won more time yesterday (December 15) as the California Fish and Game Commission voted to adopt a 90-day extension of emergency regulations for a process to take the Western Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia) during the California Endangered Species Act (CESA) candidacy period.

The commission also adopted a 90-day extension of emergency regulations for “incidental take” of a limited number of Western Joshua Trees during its candidacy period under certain circumstances, meaning property owners and developers may have to wait on their permits for removal of the beloved desert icon.

The agenda item was part of the consent calendar, meaning they are “expected to be routine and non-controversial.” There was no specific discussion during the meeting relating to the Western Joshua tree or the current process.

The next meeting of the California Fish and Game Commission is scheduled for February 16-17, 2022 and can be attended by the public via zoom. For more info, visit https://fgc.ca.gov/.
