The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, CalFire, in San Bernardino County has recently acquired a new communications system. The Automatic Vehicle Location system uses cellular, VHF, and satellite communication methods to allow for usage in even the most remote areas of California. The AVL system allows for computer-aided dispatch connectivity and position updates of fire response vehicles on the front lines. Battalion chiefs, fire engines, crew transports, dozers, and transport vehicles will all be connected by the new system. The San Bernardino unit is the 18th unit in the state to receive the new AVL system.
