The Bureau of Land Management Ridgecrest Field Office will round up about 300 wild burros on Friday (May 28). Ernest Figueroa has more information about how residents can watch…
The BLM will round up about 300 burros in the Centennial Herd Area Friday; the burros will later be offered for sale or adoption. The BLM plans to use helicopters and wranglers to move the burros at a slow pace from the one million-acre herd area, located about 10 miles north and east of Ridgecrest. The current burro overpopulation is located on fragile desert and creosote scrub ecosystems, where forage and water are scarce, endangering the overall land health with the possibility of permanent, irrecoverable damage. The public is welcome to watch the round up as long as doing so does not jeopardize the safety of the animals, staff, and observers; or disrupt gather operations.
