16-year-old boy fell off a rock formation inside Joshua Tree National Park yesterday afternoon and had to be rescued by firefighters. County fire Captain Jay Dimoff said about 2 p.m., the boy, who was part of an educational group from San Diego, was rock scrambling about 1 ½ miles from the Boy Scout trailhead when he fell about 15 feet and got wedged into an outcropping about 50 feet up. Dimoff said that due to the difficulty of reaching the boy, a helicopter was called in and the boy was hoisted out. Dimoff said because the boy had briefly lost consciousness, he was flown to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs for evaluation.
