At tomorrow’s 10 a.m. (December 7) meeting of County Supervisors in San Bernardino, the board will conduct a public hearing and likely vote on a long-awaited proposal to repeal the current county code on Glare and Outdoor Lighting and replace it with updated lighting standards that will focus primarily on light pollution and light trespass. Reporter Mike Lipsitz is here to shine some light on the effort to mitigate this threat to the high desert’s renowned dark skies…
The proposed Light Trespass Ordinance was developed with extended and thorough engagement of area community groups. It won unanimous approval from the County Planning Commission and would require shielding on exterior light fixtures to minimize glare and light-spill onto adjoining properties; mandate warm-tone light sources, and require the use of energy-efficient LED technology.
Following that public hearing and vote, the board will recess until 1 p.m. then reconvene to conduct a second public hearing on the redistricting process and two final proposed supervisorial district maps, one of which will be included in an ordinance scheduled for final adoption when the board next meets on December 14.
Tomorrow’s hearings and discussions will be live-streamed to the video conferencing facility at the Bob Burke Government Center in Joshua Tree where the public may attend and comment.
