BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVE JOSHUA TREE SOLAR FARM

Yesterday saw the end of an almost two-year battle between energy giant NextEra and a diverse collection of those opposed to a large-scale solar development at the former site of the Joshua Tree airport. Assignment reporter Mike Lipsitz tells us which side emerged victorious …
The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors yesterday upheld the prior Planning Commission decision to approve a 115-acre industrial solar development at the former site of the Roy Williams Airport in Joshua Tree. The ruling came in a 4-to-1 decision with Third District County Supervisor James Ramos casting the opposing vote. The decision is a setback to property owners in the rural residential area around the project and to local environmental groups which objected to the proximity of the project to the National Park and scenic view sheds, and to the impact of the project on dust levels, soil and native plant preservation, as well as other environmental concerns. Barring some surprise legal move, yesterday’s decision was the last avenue possible for those aiming to stop the project.
