A blizzard warning has been issued for certain mountain areas in San Bernardino County, including parts of the Sierra Nevada mountain range near the Morongo Basin. The blizzard warning, issued by the National Weather Service’s San Diego office, went into effect at 4 a.m. this morning (February 24) and will remain in place until 4 p.m. tomorrow (February 25).
The warning indicates that travel through the area will be very difficult to impossible, owing to extremely high wind and extremely heavy snow fall. The blizzard warning encompasses the entire portion of the San Bernardino range that is within San Bernardino County, and many parts of the range that stretch to Los Angeles County. The total snow accumulation above 5000 feet is predicted to be 1 to 3 feet, wind gusts are expected up to 60 mph, and visibility will be less than one quarter mile. The National Weather Service says this is the very first time the San Diego office has issued a blizzard warning.
Wet conditions and high winds are expected in the Morongo Basin.
