The severe cold caused one lane of State route 62 in 29 Palms to close early this morning. Sheriff’s Sergeant Jim Thornburg said a water leak, suspected to be from a fire hydrant, froze in temperatures in the mid-20’s this morning, causing black ice on the stretch of highway. Thornburg said there had been 4-5 cars that hit the ice and spun out, causing some damage to the vehicles but no injuries. CalTrans and TPWD arrived to fix and stabilize the road surface.
