BILL TO CREATE SIX OHV AREAS AND EXPAND 2 NATIONAL PARKS PASSES THE HOUSE

A bill to establish or expand six off-highway vehicle recreation areas in the California desert passed unanimously in the House of Representatives Monday. HR 857, the California Off-Road Recreation and Conservation Act was sponsored by Representative Paul Cook of Yucca Valley. The six OHV areas cover roughly 300,000 acres and are in Johnson Valley, Spangler Hills, El Mirage, Rasor, Dumont Dunes, and Stoddard Valley. The bill creates additional protections for OHV users and ensures that those areas cannot be closed administratively. In addition, HR857 adds about 39,000 acres to Joshua Tree National Park and Death Valley National Parks. The bill now goes to the Senate.
