A rather small crowd of under a dozen likely voters gathered last night to hear from a crowded field of candidates for the Bighorn-Desert View Water Agency’s Governing Board. Reporter Mike Lipsitz was there and files this report…
Last night in Flamingo Heights, five hopefuls vying for three open seats on the Bighorn-Desert View Water Agency’s board of directors met for a candidate forum at the community association there. Candidates answered a series of questions designed to give audience members insight into their knowledge of and vision for the agency, as well as their acumen for public administration. All five had high praise for current agency operations, but distinctions emerged between each candidate. John Burkhart’s focus was on interties with neighboring water districts and between systems within the district. Incumbent Judy Corl-Lorono was distinguished by her years of board service and community involvement. John Skerbelis would grow the district by expanding service connections. David Chapman focused on risk aversion to safeguard the status quo. And JoMarie McKenzie’s aim was on controlling expenses, public outreach and capital maintenance. All five candidates meet for a second public forum at 6 p.m. this Monday, October 22 at Belfield Hall in Landers.
