The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of reading in American culture. The Big Read event for the Morongo Basin will feature the book “Station Eleven.” Managing editor has more information about the kick-off event…

The Big Read is a month-long series of events in the Morongo Basin that is designed to inspire conversation and discovery through the joy of sharing a good book. The book chosen for the Morongo Basin Big Read is “Station Eleven,” which imagines a world in which most of the population has been killed by a flu. A group of musicians and artists, whose motto is from Star Trek: Voyager, “Survival is insufficient,” are traveling around the Great Lakes area performing for the few people who are left. A kick-off event will be held at the Mojave Desert Land Trust on the highway in Joshua Tree on Saturday, September 7. People will be able to pick up free copies of the book from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will also be music by the Shadow Mountain Band, art, and more.
