The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of reading in American culture. The program highlights old favorites and modern classics, encouraging people to come together to read and discuss a single book in their communities. The Big Read event for the Morongo Basin will feature the book “Station Eleven.” Managing editor Tami Roleff has more information about community readings and book discussions…
“Station Eleven” is a 2014 novel by Emily St. John Mandel that takes place in the Great Lakes region after a fictional swine flu pandemic has killed most of the population. It won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2015. The libraries of Copper Mountain College, Joshua Tree, Twentynine Palms, and the Yucca Valley will all hold book discussions on “Station Eleven” beginning September 11 through October 2. In addition, there will be community readings of original works by writers at multiple locations in the Morongo Basin beginning September 13 through September 29.
