BICYCLE SAFETY – NOW MORE THAN EVER

It is unnecessary to wear a face mask when walking, running, jogging, or biking alone (or with a household member). But keep it around your neck, and pull it up when you are approaching or passing other people. Courtesy photo

May is the National Bicycle Safety Month, and the California Highway Patrol and the Office of Traffic Safety are joining forces to remind everyone to share the road safely and courteously. Reporter Hilary Sloane offers these safety tips from the CHP…

With the current stay-at-home order, many people are riding bicycles for exercise and change of scenery. The CHP warns bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists to stay alert. Drivers must give bicyclists at least three feet when passing. Drivers should look for bicyclists, especially when crossing into a designated bike lane, as well as looking before opening a car door.

California law requires cyclists under 18 to wear a helmet, but it is a good idea for everyone. Many CHP Area offices will give helmets to children who do not have them. Call the Morongo Basin CHP office at 760-366-3707 for information.
