The AARP Fraud Watch Network helps raise awareness about consumer fraud and identity theft. In this report, Mike Lipsitz explains what to watch for so you can avoid becoming a victim…
Romance scams start with fake profiles on online dating sites. The scammer, who is allegedly working abroad, quickly builds a relationship with the targeted victim. They exchange photos, romantic messages, or even talk on the phone. Then they make a request for money for an emergency or maybe to pay for a face-to-face visit. The target sends money, and then never hears from them again. Be extra cautious looking for romance online. If something doesn’t sit right, sever contact. And if you get scammed, report it to the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Department. Then contact the American Association of Retired Persons Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork for more information on fraud prevention.
