BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDERS FROM THE CHP

LEAD: Children are heading back to school and the California Highway Patrol has some safety reminders for motorists. With more, here’s Rebecca Havely …
The CHP wants to remind motorists that there is no passing a school bus when its red lights are flashing. Yellow flashing lights are a warning to slow down and prepare to stop. Children don’t always recognize traffic hazards or risks and may dart out into traffic, so be alert. Remember that 25 miles per hour is the maximum speed in school zones, so slow down and use extra caution. Parents, teach your children to be safe pedestrians. Stand 10 feet away from the road at bus stops and don’t play running games, push, or shove near roads. If something is dropped near the bus, never pick it up; instead, tell the bus driver and wait for assistance. If you miss the bus, do not run after it. Before crossing the street; stop, look left, right, and then left again. Cross at corners, crosswalks, or intersections wherever possible. Remember, traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility.
