BABY IT’S COLD INSIDE: A NEW MEGA-FREEZER FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT

School district officials held court yesterday at their latest pride and joy; a brand-new freezer. Reporter David Haldane wore a coat to the event and filed this report…
The thing is so big that you can almost get lost in it. So cold that even a warm jacket won’t keep your teeth from chattering. And so new that its mere mention still brings gleams to the eyes of its creators.
We’re talking, of course, about the Morongo Unified School District’s new $100,000, 1,536-square-foot freezer, bigger and more expensive than many people’s homes.
Proud school officials christened it yesterday with an open house and grand tour at district headquarters in Twentynine Palms. The thing is, they said, when you serve 366,000 breakfasts and 827,000 lunches annually, well, you just need a place to store all that food.
So they got a grant and built this wonder of human ingenuity. Among its features: a running temperature of minus seven degrees, lots of space and—yesterday at least—plenty of ice cream treats for anyone willing to brave the chill.
Bottom line: despite the frigid temperature, no one got a cold shoulder.
