A new kind of business – one that few people have heard of – may soon get a conditional use permit in Twentynine Palms. Reporter David Haldane explains…
Ever feel like throwing an axe?
You may get your chance if the Twentynine Palms Planning Commission approves a request to open a business for, well, just that purpose. Basically, the petitioners say, it would be an indoor range housing targets at which competing axe throwers would heave their deadly instruments. “Darts with an adrenaline rush,” is how the would-be proprietors described their plan in a letter to the city. “It’s a hot new sport gaining in popularity and loads of fun.”
Be that as it may, the commission’s staff was loath to find any pertinent provisions in the city’s development code, which allows sports stadiums, amusement parks, bowling alleys, pool halls, dance halls, skating rinks, golf courses, tennis courts, pinball arcades, fitness clubs and indoor shooting ranges but makes no mention of axe-throwing establishments.
In the end, they decided that it’s not unlike a shooting range and recommended approval. The verdict may come at 5 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) when the full commission meets at City Hall.
