Many hikers are reported lost each year while hiking through Joshua Tree National Park, often resulting in exhaustive Search-and-Rescue operations and unnecessary injuries and deaths to hikers. To help hikers stay safe on the trails, The Desert Institute will offer a class on Saturday, March 7, on how to avoid getting lost while hiking. Reporter Andrew Dieleman laces up his hiking boots for this potentially life-saving class…
The Desert Institute urges all visitors to stay safe while hiking through the National Park. Through this survival class, hikers will learn the essentials for safely exploring the sometimes harsh and often challenging desert landscape of Joshua Tree National Park. The 1.5-hour presentation will be followed by a dinner break, then hikers will travel into the park for a two-mile moonlit night hike. The class will be held from 3:30-8 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Visitor Center, 6554 Park Boulevard. The cost is $35 for Park Association members and $45 for nonmembers.
