Get ready to hear the “Sounds of Freedom” coming from the Johnson Valley area starting tomorrow. The FAA established a Controlled Firing Area, or CFA, in Johnson Valley to support Marine Corps training activities. The CFA is in an Exclusive Military Use Area of Johnson Valley, and will not affect either aircraft flying overhead or recreational use by civilians in Johnson Valley. This CFA is set up so the Marines can fire small arms, mortars, and artillery without having to limit the movement of aircraft overhead. CFAs are not depicted on aeronautical charts or published to Notices to Airmen because when an aircraft is observed in the area, all activity is stopped. The first live-fire training in the newly designated area is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday August 24. Depending on atmospheric conditions, the sounds from the training may be amplified throughout the local area.
