POWER OUTAGE IN PARTS OF YUCCA VALLEY YESTERDAY

A power outage in the Sky Harbor and Story Park areas of Yucca Valley yesterday evening caused discomfort to many residents in 90 degree temperatures. A County Fire spokesman said a transformer blew out at Amador and Joshua Drive in Yucca Valley shortly before 6 p.m., leaving many residents in that area without power. A Marine lance corporal based at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms was killed Wednesday in the Helmand province of Afghanistan. The Department of Defense said Lance Corporal. Curtis Duarte, 22, of Covina was killed in combat. Lance Corporal Duarte was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms. SIGN-UPS BEING TAKEN FOR JOSHUA TREE YOUTH SOCCER PROGRAM

Joshua Tree Recreation and Park District is offering a fall soccer program. Soccer is open to children ages 4-18 and registration will take place on Saturday, August 4 and Saturday, August 18 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Community Center in Sunburst Park. The fee is $45 per participant. The season will run from September 24 through November 15.

A recreational vehicle is a total loss after a fire in Johnson Valley Tuesday morning. About 11 a.m., Yucca Mesa firefighters received a call of a motor home on fire in the 51400 block of Joshua Tree Road.
