ARSON SUSPECTED IN BURNS CANYON/RIMROCK AREA CABIN FIRE

The Sheriff’s Department is investigating an arson fire out in the Burns Canyon/Rimrock area. About 9:15 p.m. Saturday, July 25, San Bernardino County firefighters were called to a structure fire in the Burns Canyon area that had been evacuated during the Lake Fire last month. Battalion Chief Tom Marshall said the area was too rugged for fire engines to drive, and so Forest Service fire engines had to be called in from the Baldwin Lake area. He added it took the division fire chief over an hour to arrive on scene. The structure—which was a complete loss by the time firefighters arrived—had been a historic cabin, about 100 years old. Marshall said two other small vegetation fires had been reported in the same area—within a mile of the cabin fire. As there was no lightning in the area, the cause of the fire is deemed “suspicious.” Marshall said fire investigators and the Sheriff’s department have a suspect in the arson.Anyone with information should call the Sheriff’s Department at 760-366-4175.
